Zoë and I Summit Mt Baldy | 5-20-17
Zoë and I Hiked Mt Baldy together on Saturday May 20th, 2017. She was a few days under 9 months old which is absolutely crazy in retrospect. We got started at the Manker Flats Trailhead at 6:00Am sharp. We chose to go up the Baldy Bowl Route because of it's quick but steep ascent. There was a large group gathering at the trailhead which we swirly passed. I knew if I was going to make it, I needed to power through it. While passing someone on the trail they were shocked at how quickly I was moving with the baby on board. I mentioned that we were going for a personal record... Which was true, but I made it sound like we had done it before. If I had a dollar for every person that said something about Zoë, how cute she was, or how great of a dad I was, I could be a full time hiker for a living.
With our brisk pace and not stopping at all we made it to the Summit in 2 Hrs and 48 Mins. Just before 9:00 AM. We stopped for a quick meal and drink. There was a small crowd of about 20 people on the summit. All were very impressed with both of us. We took some photos and began to make our way back down the Devil's backbone route because its' much less steep and easier on the knees. However, it was much too windy so we decided to go back down the way we came up. With the added weight of Zoë it took us just as long to go down as it did for us to go up. We made it back to the car by Noon.
Overall it's an amazing hike. Beautiful views the whole way. At the summit there is amazing 360 degree views. What I like about the hike the most is work to reward ratio is very high (unlike Mt Wilson). It's a hike that I believe everyone in Southern California should do at least once. You would be surprised how easy it is, and how rewarding standing on the summit of the Mountain you've looked at growing up.
